New 'Power Rangers' Movie Confirmed from Lionsgate for 2017

Go, go Power Rangers! The new Power Rangers movie is set to be released January 13, 2017 and it's going to be smashing good fun with Lionsgate Entertainment (Twilight, Hunger Games and Divergent) and the original creator, Saban Brands, collaborating to bring the rangers to the big screen once again. At first, there was the question of whether or not the reboot would be strictly targeted for children like the original TV show from 1995, Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers or if it would follow suit to some of the darker Hollywood remakes of late. However, it is known that the original five Power Rangers will return: Kimberly (Pink), Jason (Red), Billy (Blue), Zack (Black) and Trini (Yellow). It was also reported by MoviePilot that "Herotic Hollywood has stated that the original villain of Power Rangers Rita Repulsa will be back in the film to wreck havoc on Earth once again." They may even add in the Green Ranger, Tommy, played by Jason David Frank in the original series. Frank wants to be involved in the film in some way seeing as he has been a big supporter of the franchise during the past 20 years.

MTV News reports, "Saban and Lionsgate seem to be trying to market the new Power Rangers as the next big franchise along the lines of "Hunger Games," with perhaps the darker, grittier feel that's made those Young Adult films so successful. Plus, you might not just be getting one more "Rangers" movie: you might be getting a whole slew of them." Dean Israelite is set to direct the movie form the script by Ashley Miller. Israelite said and MoviePilot reports, "I read the script and was really surprised by it and thought there was a really cool, contemporary, mature but still playful, buoyant and fun take on the material, and was updated in a really interesting way... So I think it's going to be a fun, joyful [movie] but one that feels completely grounded in a real world, with real characters going through real things." There are high hopes for an awesome film and although the production is trying to keep casting under wraps, there have been a few famous names thrown around such as Meryl Streep, Liam Hemsworth, Chloe Grace Moretz  and Elizabeth Olsen!
