Australian Open, Serena Williams Out, Losses Her Cool: Smashes Tennis Racket After Losing To U.S. Teenager, Sloane Stephens [VIDEO]
Serena Williams spazzed out again after losing to an American teenager in the Australian Open. The past two weeks have been a miserable one for the all-star athlete. A microphone picked up a comment Williams said about 19-year-old Sloane Stephens, after a back injury she slowly loss, and thereafter received a code violation for smashing her racket on the court. Stephens beat the 15-time Grand Slam champion 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Williams hadn't lost since August 17, started off slowly after turning her right ankle in her opening match at Melbourne Park, "I've had a tough two weeks between the ankle ... and my back, which started hurting," Williams said. "A lot of stuff."
In the eight game, Williams hurt her back in the second set, yelled at herself and earned herself a $1,500 fine for smashing her racket. An infuriated Williams said, "I was running to the net for a drop shot," Williams said, describing the lead before her injury. "As I went to hit it, it was on the backhand. I even screamed on the court. I totally locked up after that."
Although, seeming pretty upset about the loss, Williams expressed how relieved she is now that it is over,
"Absolutely, I'm almost relieved that it's over because there's only so much I felt I could do," she said. "I've been thrown a lot of (curve) balls these two weeks."
This is not the first outburst the trendy tennis star has had on the court. In 2009, in a match with Kim Clijsters, she flipped out at a line-judge when she lost her US Open match. It was never certain what Williams said exactly to the judge, but it was along the lines of a ball and the judge's throat.
