Alexander Skarsgard Cross Dresses for 'Diary of a Teenage Girl' Premiere
Alexander Skarsgard, mostly well-known for his character Eric Northman on HBO's Original Series, Trueblood, "Hit the red carpet for The Diary of a Teenage Girl in San Francisco on Monday dressed in drag. The actor channeled the 1970s - the era in which the film is set - posing for photos in a feathered wig and a glittery, gold dress alongside costar Bel Powley and director Marielle Heller. Reports indicate that the actor did not give a reason for his attire," Entertainment Weekly reports. Apparently Skarsgard was channeling a Farrah Fawcett look. "The Swedish actor walked the red carpet at the Castro Theater in a floor length gold dress and crystal-embellished heels, carrying a silver clutch, and accessorized with large gold hoop earrings. He also had on a feathered blonde wig and full face of makeup including statement fake eyelashes, blushed cheeks, and a statement pink lip," Yahoo! News says. It's quite unusual that he would choose such an ensemble seeing as his character in the movie has sex with his girlfriend's (played by Kristen Wiig) fifteen year-old daughter.
Maybe because he was in San Francisco? Maybe because Skargard gets a tickle from cross dressing? Yahoo! News says, "Skarsgard's reasoning for choosing a sequin gown over his typical tailored suits are unclear. But, there are a few clues. Amie Sarazan, who is the Head of Costumes for Peaches Christ Productions, designed the Farrah Fawcett-inspired look. Peaches Christ, who is also known as Joshua Grannell, is drag performer who plays a transvestite in the film." It's fair to say that Skarsgard was merely trying to promote the drag performer's look and style, but it is unknown.
According to other sources, "This actually isn't the first time [Skarsgard's] worn a dress. In the 2006 Swedish film Kill Your Darlings, Skarsgard played Geert, a suicidal transvestite. His role as Eric Northman on True Blood also had him in drag," Yahoo! News says.
Regardless of Skarsgards reasons for dressing in drag, it seems like the star not only had a good time making the film, but promoting it as well! The Diary of a Teenage Girl hits theaters August 7th. If you haven't already taken a look at the trailer, you can below!
