'Star Citizen' Release Date News: Kickstarter Backer Threatens Cloud Imperium Games Lawsuit

By Jon Niles | Aug 25, 2015 08:00 PM EDT

Earlier this week, Cloud Imperium Games, the studio of developers behind the long-in-development video game Star Citizen, earned some great praise from fans after announcing that refunds are available for backers of the project. The studio has been working on the game since a Kickstarter was started in 2012, but many are mad that nothing has been announced yet. In fact, one former backer named Derek Smart has this week threated legal action against the company unless they announce a release date and explain what's been taking so long. Do you think a release date announcement will result from this lawsuit threat? Read more below.

Mr. Smart, like many other backers and followers of the title, is mad enough at the company to threaten legal action against them. According to Twinfinite.net, Smart is demanding very specific information, but is willing to sue the studio if he doesn't get it.

"As all previous calls for accountability have failed, we don't expect RSI [Roberts Space Industries] to co-operate (hence the need to contact the Federal authorities), with us," Smart wrote in a blog post on his personal website this week. "Which means that the next steps, depending on how they respond to the letter, would be for a class-action lawsuit (already in various stages of preparation), to move forward and be immediately filed. And through that, we're going to subpoena and depose every single key person, while asking for specific documents during discovery which will hopefully shed a light on what is going on."

This lawsuit news comes right on the heels of Cloud Imperium founder Chris Roberts announcing that refunds are available for those backers that want and are willing to submit a detailed and rational reasoning for one. You can read our previous coverage on this right here!
