Stephen Colbert’s ‘Late Show’ Premiere Almost Didn’t Happen Because CBS Computers Crashed

While Stephen Colbert is undoubtedly the talk of the Internet as of late as a result of his Late Show premiering on Sept. 8, it looks like all the hype and money spent on marketing from CBS was almost for nothing. Apparently the computers over at the network were having glitches with Colbert's show and the network couldn't get it uploaded until after 11:20 p.m. – just fifteen minutes before the premiere was set to air.

During Wednesday night's monologue, Colbert explained what went down. The former Report host explained that a "funny thing" happened the previous night, and because of it, he almost "needed a heart transplant."

"The show almost didn't get on the air last night. It was a little long..." Colbert said. He then directed people to some cut pieces from the premiere, including Jeb Bush's horrific Donald Trump impression and talk about George Clooney's nipples in Batman & Robin.

Anyway, because of the length of the show – we're guessing? – when Colbert's crew sent the show over to the network, "the computers kept crashing," he said.

"At 11:20 ... no one in the building could give me a guarantee for certain that the show was going to go on the air last night."

The host joked about how "exciting" that was for he and his staff, especially after CBS had spent SO much money marketing the new version of The Late Show.

Luckily, of course, all went down just fine. Colbert made it to the airwaves and delivered a stellar premiere.

Wednesday night's episode welcomed guests Scarlett Johansson, Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Kendrick Lamar, the latter of whom thanked Colbert on the Late Show's Instagram.
