Stephen Colbert on Oregon Shooting: "We Pretend That it Won’t Happen Again”

Stephen Colbert put aside his comedic genius for a couple of minutes on Friday night's episode of The Late Show and showed off his, well, pure genius while discussing the recent horrific shootings at Umpqua Community College located in Oregon. Colbert kicked off his program by admitting that he really had no idea how to start the show, but also noted that we can't just pretend that this did not happen and will not happen again.

Expressing that he oftentimes pretends to know how to do the show we've grown to love in just a couple of weeks, the former Colbert Report host explained that when it comes to the hard topic of guns, he doesn't really know what to do anymore.

"I want to talk about pretending," he started with, stating that it's something he knows a little bit about––given his "Stephen Colbert" character from Comedy Central.

"In the face of the killings in Oregon yesterday, I honestly don't know what to do or say... other that our hearts are broken by the people struck by this senseless tragedy."

He further noted that "pretending is part of the problem":

"These things happen over and over again, and we are naturally horrified and shocked when we hear about them. But then we change nothing and we pretend that it won't happen again."

The Late Show host listed the various "solutions" to the problems, ones brought up by both sides – stricter gun laws, more mental health care, better treatment, etc. – but then admitted, "Maybe it's both. I honestly don't know."

He did say, however, that changing nothing and pretending something will change itself is in fact insane.

Which was a perfect segue to Donald Trump...
