Soft Drink Ban in NYC Has Become Infamous, Date Fast Approaching
The fateful day is coming where the soft drink ban will take effect in NYC, one of the busiest hubs in the world. The ban of large sugary drinks over 16 oz. has not been very popular according to surveys.
All restaurants and food carts that serve fast food and soft drinks will need to downgrade their sizes. This ban was supported and enforced by the New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg with the hope to decrease obesity.
Soda is often inexpensive and very accessible, however it is not healthy.
"It's time to face the facts: Obesity is one of America's most deadly problems, and sugary beverages are a leading cause of it," Bloomberg said in 2012. The ban was passed in September, with challenges from small businesses.
Bloomberg is also encouraging the state to enforce this ban across supermarkets, movie theaters and stores.
New York City may be inspiring other US cities and states to follow suit to discourage drinking soft drinks. One Washington D.C. suburb is reportedly planning to set a soda ban on public school vending machines.
Other major cities might end up applying it if the obesity rate of 58% goes down in New York City as a result of the ban
Here are some citizen's opinions about this ban:
"buy a sixpack of soda at a time"
"Actually this being done to increase revenue for the city. Theaters and other stores will now be selling more individual drinks with sales tax added to each sale increasing the influx of money to the city. Bloomberg was not being a proponent of health but of getting more money for the city. Why does no one look beyond the stated reason and see the real desire of politicians, getting more money to fill their pockets."
"I never drink soda, so Im not really affected by this ban. I'm safe! But I know a friend who loves diet coke and just can't stop drinking it in large volumes EVERYDAY."
