Rapper Missy Elliott, who has returned to making rap music this year, is set to be honored for being an innovator in the music industry at the 2015 Billboard Women in Music Awards. The rapper recently released her new music video for "WTF (Where They From)" with Pharrell Williams.

The "Work It" star will receive the award during the ceremony in New York to recognize her work, which Billboard states "has consistently broken new ground," according to organizers."

Billboard's Janice Min said in a statement, "Missy Elliott is a once-in-a-generation artist and producer whose artistic brilliance and creative vision have transformed pop and hip hop music. It's such a thrill to make this announcement while Missy is on our current Billboard cover after a decade-long hiatus.

"There are few artists more respected by her peers and more creative. We are proud to honor her with the inaugural Women in Music Innovator award."

Missy Elliott thanked the publication's editors for choosing her for the honor in a post on Twitter, writing:

Billboard's ceremony will take place Dec.11, and will be broadcast on television on Dec.18.

Other honorees include Selena Gomez, Fifth Harmony, Lana Del Rey, Demi Lovato, Alabama Shakes' Brittany Howard and Lady GaGa, who has been named Woman of the Year.

Elliott, who had not released a new album since 2005, launched her comeback last week by debuting the music video for her new single "WTF (Where They From)", which features Pharrell Williams.

Missy Elliott returned to the public eye when she appeared on stage with Katy Perry during her Super Bowl halftime show.
