North Korea has officially threatened the United States today with a preemptive nuclear strike, accusing the U.S. of using military drills in South Korea to launch a nuclear war. The United Nations Security Council is now trying to figure out new sanctions to enforce against the communist country. This announcement also means that North Korea has gone against the truce that stopped the 1950 - 1953 Korean War.

The North Korean foreign ministry spokesman (unnamed) stated the following, igniting the threat:

"Since the United States is about to ignite a nuclear war, we will be exercising our right to preemptive nuclear attack against the headquarters of the aggressor in order to protect our supreme interest."

North Korean state television channel, KRT, broadcasted a statement from the country's foreign ministry on Thursday, "pledging a preemptive nuclear attack" against the United States. Click here for the video.

North Korea calls South Korea the United States' "puppet" and other threats against the two nations are a regular occurrence. Considering the recent nuclear testing earlier this year, this time the threat is being taken much more seriously.A spokesman for South Korea's defense ministry, Kim Min-seok released the following statement in regards to today's announcement:

"It hasn't been frequent that the North conducted military exercise at the state level. The North is currently conducting various drills on land, at sea and aerially. We are watching the North's activities and stepping up readiness under the assumption that these drills can lead to provocation at any time."

Reports of a no-fly zone order off of North Korea's coasts ("in a possible move to fire missiles") could not be confirmed by Kim. He did say that "any flight ban limited to near the coast would not be for weapons with meaningful ranges." Yesterday, in a rare occurrence, South Korea's military took a stand against the North saying that it would "strike back at the North and target its leadership if Pyongyang launched an attack."
