5 Actors Who Have Played Multiple Comic Book Characters: Chris Evans, Ryan Reynolds & More!

By Nobelle Borines | Dec 23, 2015 09:33 AM EST

Although most actors don't like being typecast, stars like Chris Evans and Ryan Reynolds enjoy playing comic book characters so much that they have done it over and over again.

We already know that Ben Affleck will go from playing Daredevil to Bruce Wayne in Batman v Superman, while Agent Carter star Dominic Cooper is set to go from being Howard Stark to Jesse Custer in the AMC show Preacher. These stars have been left out for only playing two comic book characters.

The following actors in this list have portrayed more than three different heroes (or villains), and number one has played so many characters it is impossible to list everything down! So let's take a look at our list.

BRANDON ROUTH

Superman in Superman Returns
Todd Ingram in Scott Pilgrim v. The World
Dylan Dog in Dylan Dog: Dead of Night
Ray Palmer (The Atom) in Arrow, The Flash and DC's Legends of Tomorrow

The Canadian actor seemed like a perfect candidate to play the Man of Steel in the 2010 film, but he was an even better fit as the wealthy (and exceptionally good-looking) scientist Ray Palmer in the third season of Arrow. Routh would later appear in an episode for The Flash before teaming up with a new group of superheroes in DC's Legends of Tomorrow.

Fun Fact: Routh plays the third ex that Michael Cera has to defeat in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. The second ex is our next entry.

CHRIS EVANS

Johnny Storm (Human Torch) in Fantastic 4 and Fantastic 4: The Rise of the Silver Surfer
Jake Jensen in The Losers
Lucas Lee in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Steve Rogers (Captain America) in the Captain America trilogy and two Avengers movies

Evans may be known for playing the blond, blue-eyed All-American superheroes like The Human Torch and Steve Rogers, but there was also a time when he portrayed a blond, blue-eyed computer hacker named Jensen in The Losers opposite Zoe Saldana and the list's number two entry.

Fun Fact: If you were having trouble spotting Evans in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, the actor dyed his hair black to play the professional skateboarder who happens to have superhuman strength.

RYAN REYNOLDS

Hannibal King in Blade: Trinity
Hal Jordan (Green Lantern) in Green Lantern
Nick Walker in R.I.P.D (Rest in Peace Department)
Wade Wilson (Deadpool) in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Deadpool

Although he was stood out as the sidekick to Wesley Snipes in Trinity, Reynolds later went on to portray mediocre versions of Green Lantern and Deadpool. With the support of fans, the actor openly rallied for the return of Deadpool to the big screen, but this time, in his own terms. Suffice to say, the 2016 film also pokes fun at Green Lantern but completely ignores Wolverine.

Fun Fact: Reynolds worked hard to transform into Hannibal King. His workout routine involved heavy weight and martial arts training, lots of cardio as well as a very strict diet

JEFFREY DEAN MORGAN

Edward Blake (The Comedian) in Watchmen
Franklin Clay in The Losers
Jeb Turnbull in Jonah Hex
Thomas Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Negan in The Walking Dead

It's becoming obvious that Morgan simply could not turn down an opportunity to play a comic book character, whether it is in films or in TV shows. After playing the Comedian in Zack Snyder's Watchmen, he also appeared as the leader of The Losers with Evans. Morgan is set to appear as Bruce Wayne's father in Batman v Superman but his most challenging and exciting role will be in The Walking Dead, where he will portray Negan, TV's most highly awaited villain.

Fun Fact: For some strange reason, Morgan is uncredited as Quentin Turnbull's son in Jonah Hex

MARK HAMILL

The Joker in numerous Batman animated projects including Batman: The Killing Joke
Hobgoblin in the Spider-Man animated series
Gargoyle in The Incredible Hulk animated series
Solomon Grundy and Trickster in Justice League Unlimited
James Jesse (The Trickster) in The Flash

(Seriously, there are way too many to count. Just check Hamill's filmography for proof.)

He may be best known for playing Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars movies, but Hamill is remembered by comic book fans for providing the distinctive voice of The Joker in several Batman animated projects. In addition to that, the actor has provided the voice for several Marvel and DC characters in the 90s up until now. Most recently, Hamill portrayed The Trickster in the first season of The Flash and will return as the Clown Prince of Crime in the animated adaptation of Batman: The Killing Joke.

Fun Fact: The comic book series The Secret Service begins with the abduction and death of Mark Hamill. The film adaptation features the actor as a professor named James Arnold, who also happens to be kidnapped and killed in the movie.
