Star Wars: The Force Awakens could possibly be venturing to a place where no man has boldly gone before. And yes, we realize that's a Star Trek reference, but it's still true. It's being reported that the recent Star Wars could very well become the top-grossing domestic film of all time.

Gossip Cop reports that the J.J. Abrams-directed film recently earned nearly $35 million this past Friday, New Year's Day. That number adds to the film's reported domestic gross, which totals to approximately $740.3 million since opening day.

The publication reports that should things continue going Star Wars' way – and let's face it, it will – the film will easily top James Cameron's 2009 release of Avatar, which earned an all-time domestic record of $760.5 million.

The Force Awakens was released back on Dec. 18, much to the enjoyment of Star Wars fans all across the globe. It instantly became a success (obviously), but did earn some minor criticism from the man at the (original) helm, George Lucas.

During an interview with Charlie Rose, Lucas reportedly discussed selling the rights to Lucas Films to Disney, likening them to "white slavers."

He's since come out and explained that he was out of line:

"I misspoke and used a very inappropriate analogy and for that I apologize," he said, according to Rolling Stone.

Lucas' comments can be heard below at the 2:00 mark:

Criticisms aside, it's probably safe to say that Star Wars: The Force Awakens will have a very Happy New Year.
