The blue moon is expected to reach its full phase on August 31, 2012 at 9:58 a.m. EST and into the night for people who live on the east coast cities of USA including New York (NY) and New Jersey (NJ) among others. Night sky watchers, friends, family, and lovebirds can enjoy the beautiful night light on Friday.
Neil Armstrong's funeral service will also take place on the day of the blue moon. He is the earth's first person to ever step on the moon decades ago. Armstrong passed away this past Saturday at age 82.
Armstrong and a crew of bold astronomers took the trek to the moon decades ago and ended some of the mystery surrounding the beautiful star that gives light to earth in the evening time. They brought home moon rocks and there has not been another trip made to the moon since.
It's not a blue colored moon, but it is a term that represents the extra full moon that we receive in the season. It only occurs every 2.7 years and gives a special occasion for people to enjoy a night out together.
The next blue moon will occur in July 2015.
