The fatal air show disaster of Iowa left the audience speechless as Texas pilot Glenn Smith crashed into his death. He was killed instantly as the aircraft nosedived into a field and erupt into flames. The 59-year-old was known as an expert in his field for decades and would precisely plan out every step of a flight before riding.
Smith's good friend Randy Ball said, "They practiced the day before and everything went fine."
The cause of the death is still unknown and is being investigated by The National Transportation Safety Board. A preliminary report can be expected in one week, the senior air safety investigator Aaaron Sauer said, however the final report may not be ready for several months.
Inspectors will examine the pieces that remained from the plane and Smith's autopsy and toxicology reports to lead to an answer.
Video footage was caught by a witness of the accident. Jim Wilson who is devastated at the loss of his best friend expressed, "I can't bear to look at it."
"He was guy who crossed every T and dotted every I. He knew everything about his airplane," Wilson reportedly said on CBS News.
Smith enjoyed his time restoring Soviet fighter jets and flying to exhibitions in America. The accident occurred during a formation with fellow pilots of the HopperFlight team in a Davenport air show.
The HopperFlight's mission on their website is to "educate the general public, inspire kids to work hard in school and aim high in life, have fun."
