Serena Williams' US Open 2012 victory over Victoria Azarenka was a great surprise to the US tennis star. She admitted that she was already preparing her runner-up speech seeing how great of a player Azarenka was. To her own shock, she ended up taking home the coveted winner's trophy. She is pictured hugging the trophy with such joy, it's hard to not smile looking at her.
Meanwhile, Azarenka spilled tears in her chair as it hit her that she had lost the match. She was ahead of the game and everyone had expected her to win.
"It could have gone my way, probably yes, but it didn't," Azarenka told New York Times. "And it really, really hurts and those emotions come out and you feel sad, but it's time to realize what happened today. You know, it was a great match. It was close but not for me."
"Serena deserves the win. She showed how true of a champion she is," Azarenka also said. "I definitely gave it all today. Stepping out of this court today, I will have no regrets."
As Williams gave her in-court speech, she spoke out, "Oh my God. I honestly can't believe I won. I really was preparing my runner-up speech, because I thought, 'Man, she's playing so great.' "
Azarenka will still remain as the No. 1 woman tennis player in the world even though she lost this match.
She also proves to be a good sport and compliments Williams even further.
"For me she is the greatest player of all time," Azarenka said. "She took the game to the next level."
