Baby Kate Phillips' mother Ariel Courtland has reportedly filed paperwork on Monday to marry Sean Phillips, the man who was suspected for killing the infant girl last year. Why would she do that?
The child has been missing since June 29, 2011 and her body has yet to be found.
On the fateful day of Baby Kate's death, Courtland made a 9-1-1 call to the police to report, "I was supposed to take her for a DNA test at 1 o'clock for child support. He came over, I thought he was going to give us a ride there so we got in the car and then I forgot something in my house, so I ran upstairs to get my keys, and I came back down and they're gone."
Sean Phillips is the biological father of "Baby Kate Phillips" and was reportedly the last person to have seen the young infant alive according to a report and letter obtained by WOOD-TV-8. Courtland was present in court to testify against him. He was convicted of unlawful imprisonment in April 2011, and was sentenced to 10-15 years of jail time. The case is now considered homicide.
The latest reports reveal that Courtland is now trying to marry him.
The details of a letter obtained by TV-8 may explain the reason why Courtland would resort to such a drastic measure.

TV-8 obtained a letter that Phillips had written to Courtland from prison that addressed details about the death of "Baby Kate"
In the letter, he explained how Baby Kate died, and what happened to her body, and the reason why he might be getting married to Courtland.
According to TV-8, the five-page letter appears to be real with Sean Phillips' name and prison ID on the envelope, and written on jail-issued lined paper.
In the letter, Phillips tried to explain how he believed Baby Kate died. He claimed that he did not know the infant was left in his car when he drove off from the mother. He thought Courtland left an empty car seat in his car so that she could control him and ask him to bring the car seat back. Though the phone was ringing while he was driving, he couldn't reach the phone and out of frustration, he threw the seat out, along with the baby. He later realized that the baby was also in the seat but it was too late.
"(I) was just going to throw it out onto that area between Burger King. I pulled but it was jammed between the seats. That just made it worse. I grabbed it at the top and ripped it out as hard as I could. She was thrown from it. I didn't know. I'm so sorry. Held her for a long time. Seemed like forever. Maybe an hour, maybe a minute," his letter explained.
"I've never cried that hard. Seemed like my throat was closing ... I was in shock."
While in shock, Phillips just drove around and when he realized what he had done he stopped the car.
"For the first time I could think some. Thought about Kate. Her smile. The way she looks around. Everything. I cried until I somehow couldn't anymore. She was set in a peaceful place. I was walking and lost. ... For the first time I realized I had left her. I wanted to die."
He also claimed that he never dumped the baby's body ruthlessly.
"Everything just happened, and I never had a chance to do the right thing"
Towards the end of the letter, Phillips wrote, "Things spouses tell each other in confidence can't be made to testify. But we aren't married yet in the eye of the government"
Finally, the letter concluded with "Out of time for mail. Destroy this. We'll talk."
It looks like Courtland has taken his words seriously and filed to marry him on Monday. She told M-LIVE.com that she is not marrying because she loves him. She thinks being married to him will give her visitation rights in order to find out more details about Baby Kate's death.
She now has 30 days to marry Phillips before her marriage application is null.
TV-8 reported that police are aware of the letter but have not made any comments about it.
