The Lingerie Football League, founded by a man named Mitchell Mortaza, kicked off its first season in Toronto, Canada on Saturday night September 15, 2012. Although the seats were only half-filled, Mortaza was not shaken by it.
"At this point you're just thrilled to get the game (going) and show the people of Regina that this is real football played by real athletes, which is what we've been talking about for months now," Mortaza said according to The Province. "The way the game ended, the thrill that was in the air, it was just icing on the cake. I had a building representative come up to me and say they hadn't seen that kind of electricity here for many years. That was good to hear."
The LFL's headquarters is located in Las Vegas and Mortaza traveled to Regina Brandt centre for the first game part of Canada's inaugural league.
Regina Rage won against Toronto Triumph with a score of 40-32. The Toronto Triumph has competed in the U.S. league before.
He explained that when the sport began in the US in 2009, it only attracted 700 fans the first year. He sees a great potential for the sport become more popular over time.
"This is exactly the formula we used in the States," Mortaza explained believing that it will be a success.
The Lingerie Football League is exactly how one would picture it: women wearing lingerie and playing football on a field.
Mortaza insisted that the players were professional athletes with real careers.
Others have found the sport to be controversial due to the nature of women wearing almost nothing while playing a rough sport.
