Wigan Athletic recently saw some FA Cup success but still need to pick up three points during their away match against Arsenal today. A defeat against Arsenal mean Wigan would be relegated immediately. Also, after Arsenal dropped down to fifth place in the league, a victory today would boost the back up into Champions League territory. So both teams need this match in order to stay alive.
To be fair, Wigan needs this more then Arsenal. Relegation is no joke and Arsenal will not be facing relegation if they lose this match. Wigan recently defeated Manchester City (2nd place in the league) in an FA Cup matchup this weekend, so perhaps that victory will be a big enough boost for today's game. If today's match ends up in a tie, Wigan would have to wait for their next game to find out if they would be relegated out of the Premier League. Unfortunately for them, that would mean Sunderland (who is about 12 goals ahead of Wigan) to lose their last match as well. Clearly, the odds are against Wigan, who is in 18th place in the Barclays Premier League standing.
So what can we expect today? First of all, each team has a few unavailable players. Wigan is missing Ronnie Stam, Jean Beausejour and Maynor Figueroa today and Arsenal has Abou Diaby and Olivier Giroud out today.
