Jay Cutler is back as the Chicago Bears starting quarterback. With last week's starter Jimmy Clausen suffering a concussion after Chicago's loss to Detroit on Sunday, and the NFL team wanting to finish the season on a high, Bears head coach Marc Trestman has turned back to his benched, $126 million star. Will this mean the husband of The Hills and Laguna Beach star Kristin Cavallari could stay in Chicago and avoid a trade to the New York Jets, Washington Redskins, Tennessee Titans or St Louis Rams? Or will the Bears still trade Cutler and look to Marcus Mariota or Jamies Winston in the 2015 NFL draft to be their solution at quarterback?
Cutler will return to the starting QB spot after Clausen suffered a concussion following a huge head-high hit against Detroit.
As Sports Illustrated report, Clausen, in his first start at QB since 2010, "completed 23 of 39 passes for 181 yards with two touchdowns and an interception" in the game that saw Chicago lose 20-14 to NFC North division foes the Detroit Lions.
But after the game Clausen reportedly experienced concussion-like symptoms, prompting the Bears to make the switch back to Cutler, with the NFL club tweeting:
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport then tweeted out that that Bears "plan to start QB Jay Cutler (again) on Sunday in their finale, with rookie David Fales serving as the back up, I'm told."
It was confirmed by Bears coach Marc Trestman when fronting the media, with the Bears official account tweeting out:
After Cutler was benched last week in favor of Clausen — as reported by Mstars News — questions swirled as to the Bears plans for the future and whether or not they'd try to trade, or even waive, their starting quarterback, who signed a $126 million contract at the start of the year.
Cutler's return might not clear up the Bear QB situation, however. As SB Nation's Ryan Van Bibber points out, "Clausen's effort would seem to reemphasize the notion that Cutler really is the problem (for the Bears offense anyway), especially when you consider what the Bears were able to do with Josh McCown last season."
ESPN reported Bears kicker Robbie Gould being confused (he's a kicker, after all) about the entire QB situation. "I honestly don't even know what the message is," said Gould regarding Trestman's desperate plea to save his job by benching Culter. "I think he thought maybe he thought this was going to provide a spark to the team. That's what he told us. I wish Jay were out there playing." He added that Trestman "made a decision he thought was best for the team, and listen, we lost again. That's the bottom line."
Gould added in a surprising display of emotional integrity: "To be honest with you, I feel really bad for Jay. When you're having a tough season like this, he's not the guy to be the scapegoat or the guy to blame."
The news of Cutler's follows reports that the Titans might be interested in Cutler, says Sports Illustrated.
NFL.com's Rapoport added that Nashville is Cutler's preferred destination if he is traded, having gone to Tennessee's Vanderbilt college. If Nashville is an option, where else could the Chicago QB end up?
