It's always hilarious and enlightening to see HBO's Last Week Tonight with John Oliver take on a new subject, from FIFA corruption to even Donald Trump's name. Last weekend, the comedian took a day off for Easter, but he still left a web-exclusive clip on YouTube conspiracy videos, taking on Cadbury Creme Eggs' connection to the Illuminati.
Making up for his absence from television sets all over America last Sunday, the Daily Show alum did what he does best; make a point with an exaggeration.
Pointing out how ridiculous YouTube conspiracy theories usually are (including the one where Katy Perry is supposedly grown-up JonBenet Ramsey) and how they're "science fiction for people who don't know they're watching science fiction," Oliver explains the elements needed for a solid conspiracy theory.
"Any great Internet conspiracy video needs two key things: one, a wild claim that something we take for granted is actually the responsibility of robots, aliens or U.S. Presidents who are also robots or aliens," Oliver explained. "And two, you need an eye for incredibly specific detail and an ability to make wild accusations with complete confidence."
The late-night host then proposes his own absurd theory, where he "follows the money" behind Cadbury Crème Eggs in a hilarious clip, from German gold and the holiday classic Miracle on 34th Street all the way to Freemasons and, of course, the Illuminati, because that's where all great conspiracy theories should end.
Much like Stephen Colbert, Oliver learned everything he knows about the late night business from Jon Stewart, as the two current hosts first started as correspondents on The Daily Show. Colbert followed more politically heavy content on his previous show, The Colbert Report starring his alternate persona, but has gotten tamer since taken over The Late Show.
Aside from new Daily Show host Trevor Noah, Oliver has inherited the baton in subject-driven comedy in late night, tackling topics as varied as Dr. Mehmet Oz's controversies to the creation and maintenance of infrastructure.
Oliver's Last Week Tonight will return to HBO this Sunday.
