Rene Angelil, Celine Dion's husband and former manager, has had died of throat cancer. He was 73.

Angelil died this morning at the couple's home in Las Vegas, after living with the disease and treatments for 17 years, according to Billboard

The Canadian entertainment manager's death comes five months after Dion's return to her residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas; she had taken a leave in 2014 to care for her husband. Upon her return in August, the "My Heart Will Go On" told the press that Angelil's cancer was terminal and he only had weeks to live.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his condolences to Dion through Twitter, Reuters reported .

Angelil, 26 years Dion's senior, discovered the budding diva when she was just 12 years old, and was instrumental in molding her career. The two announced their relationship in 1993 and married a year later in a lavish ceremony at Montreal's Notre Dame Basilica.

The couple has three sons: 14-year-old René-Charles and 5-year-old twins Eddy and Nelson.

Angelil's cancer was diagnosed in 1999. At the time, Dion put her career on hold to take care of her husband, later coming back.

When Angelil's condition worsened in 2014, Dion took a year off to care for him, and Angelil stepped down as her manager after representing her for her entire career.

More details will be provided at a later time, reads the press release regarding his passing, posted on Dion's website. "The family requests that their privacy be respected."
