It's been two years since the last time Kiefer Sutherland's Jack Bauer was on screen, with the 2014 mini-series 24: Live Another Day, and it may really be the last time the character appears in that universe: Fox has ordered a new spinoff with an all-new cast, as the show goes Jason Bourne with the upcoming 24: Legacy.

According to Variety, Fox has officially ordered a pilot for a reboot of the series, which will begin filming this winter. While Sutherland's character won't be involved, the rest of the series' trademarks will be present, including split screens and, above all, the time format will continue to be the same: each episode will be one hour of a very eventful day.

It appears that none of the members of the original cast will be returning, as this one will be a fresh restart to the series, with a completely new set of characters.

Empire Online reports that the new 24 hero will be Eric Carter, a military hero who returns home to the U.S., where "trouble has followed him home." To better his situation, he asks for the help of the show's female lead, a veteran who was once head of the show's Counter Terrorist Unit. Trying to correct his own situation, he ends up getting involved in stopping a terrorist assault on the U.S.

Though Sutherland won't be acting in the new show, it appears that he will be serving behind the scene in some capacity, most likely as an executive producer alongside the people who ran the original show, including Howard Gordon, Manny Coto, Brian Grazer and Evan Katz.

Still, Donald Sutherland's son will be returning to television shortly, starring in the ABC series Designated Survivor, where he'll be playing a President who's just taken office after a terrorist attack on the U.S., so he won't be very far away from playing Bauer, really.
