Pitch Perfect actress Rebel Wilson attended the 2016 British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards last Sunday and gave a speech that has divided social media. Saying she was practicing her "transgendered face" to win her own BAFTA Award and referring to Idris Elba as "chocolate," the comedienne was walking the very thin line between comedy and offensiveness.

According to The Independent, Wilson's short monologue came as she was presenting the award for Best Supporting Actor in the London ceremony. In a line of politically incorrect jokes, the actress first made fun about the recent Oscars diversity controversy, saying she'd never been to the Academy Awards because they were racist, while the BAFTAs had "diverse members," which is "what we all want to see in life."

Going on, Wilson directly mentioned Elba, who was nominated in the category for his work in Beasts of No Nation.

"Sorry, Idris Elba you're making me a bit nervous. I'm just sociologically programmed to want chocolate on Valentine's Day," Wilson said to an audience roaring in laughter, including Elba himself, who was caught on camera doing a mock "shush" to the Bridesmaid actress.

However, not everyone took things quite as lightly, particularly regarding the comment regarding transgender people. Many took to Twitter to say Wilson's comment had been disrespectful to the LGBT community, and The Mary Sue dedicated an article to saying that it was an instance of a white celebrity using their status to advance at the expense of a minority.

While the joke could be interpreted as a way to make fun of how cisgender performers always play trans characters (notable examples include Eddie Redmayne's turn in The Danish Girl and Jared Leto's Oscar-winning role in Dallas Buyers Club), Wilson's joke has also been directly accused of being transphobic and advancing an agenda against this minority group.

Wilson herself hasn't responded to the wave of criticism regarding the joke.
