Literary monsters will come back to the small screen in the somewhat gory and always gothic-looking Penny Dreadful this spring, and there's a new trailer to tease what's coming. Golden Globe nominee Eva Green returns once more as Vanessa Ives, a beautiful witch who's being haunted by the devil, and she might even cave to his wishes on season 3 -- accompanied by a few classic villains.

Showtime has just released the first full-length trailer for the period series' third season through its official YouTube channel. On it, Vanessa, who has been fighting all kinds of evil forces since the first season (from vampires to evil witches), seems to finally cave in to the dark forces, after she gave up on God by the end of last season.

The first season of the show focused greatly on introducing a large number of Victorian characters, including a werewolf (a Josh Harnett that plays, quite literally, an American werewolf in London), Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway, plus his monster Rory Kinnear and his bride, Billie Piper) and Dorian Grey (Reeve Carney), but the second one shifted the direction.

For the better part of season 2, Penny Dreadful dealt with creating its own mythology of witches, separating them into those who followed the light and those who served the Devil.

Now, the creepy show is returning to its roots by adding one fascinating character -- or rather, two -- from Victorian literature: Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde, played by Shazad Latif, a character noticeable in the newly released trailer.

Deadline reports that this season will also feature a fairly large number of guest stars, including the return of Patti LuPone (although playing a different character this time around), Wes Studi as a Native American who shares a "deep connection" to Harnett's Ethan, Christian Camargo, Sam Barnett and Jessica Barden.

The Penny Dreadful season 3 will begin on Showtime May 1.
