Drew Barrymore Joins Netflix Comedy Series 'Santa Clarita Diet' Co-Starring Timothy Olyphant

Iconic '90s superstar Drew Barrymore has been making a slow comeback to the industry in the past couple of years, from last year's film Miss You Already to her latest endeavor: a new television comedy! The Charlie's Angels alum has signed up for Netflix's next comedy show, Santa Clarita Diet, where she'll be playing a realtor alongside Timothy Olyphant.

The streaming site turned production company announced the new show through a press release on their website last Friday, saying the project was created by Better Off Ted writer Victor Fresco, who will be serving as writer, executive producer and showrunner.

The series, a single-camera show like Netflix critical hits Master of None and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, will follow married couple Joel (Olyphant) and Sheila (Barrymore), both of whom are realtors in Santa Clarita and somewhat discontent with their lives until Barrymore's character "goes through a dramatic change sending both their lives down a road of death and destruction...but in a good way," the statement reads.

It sounds vaguely like HBO's Togetherness, but considering how consistently well-received Netflix's shows have been (with the exception of Fuller House and the Will Arnet-led Flaked), the new project sounds pretty exciting.

"The genius casting of Timothy and Drew combined with Victor's unique comedic sensibility will delight, and definitely surprise, our members around the world," said Cindy Holland, Netflix's VP of original content, according to Variety.

In any case, this will be the first time in Barrymore's career that she takes on a regular role in a live-action television series, as her acting career has been almost solely focused on the big screen, except for an HBO television movie, Grey Gardens, which earned her a Golden Globe and a SAG Award.

Olyphant, on the other hand, is something of a TV vet, having worked most recently on Justified, though his small screen credits also include Damages and Deadwood.

Santa Clarita Diet will premiere on Netflix at some point of 2017.
