During Thursday evening's ballgame between the LA Dodgers and San Diego Padres at Petco Park (April 11), Dodgers starting pitcher Zack Greinke hit Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin while up at bat during the sixth inning. Quentin quickly stormed the mound in attack mound - and that's when all hell broke loose. Fellow players and coaches ran from the team dugouts and a major fight erupted right on the field. During the intense brawl, Greinke ended up fracturing his left collarbone. According to reports, he'll likely be out for a good chunk of the 2013 MLB season.
Watch the heated Dodgers vs. Padres brawl here:
Quentin was previously hit twice by Greinke when both played together in the American League - but Thursday night's game was the final straw. Apparently there is known "history" between the two, and before Quentin charge and tackled, Greinke allegedly made some wise comments. If the popular pitcher hadn't opened his mouth, Quentin "probably" wouldn't have reacted in such a violent way.
As a result of the MLB mega-fight, Greinke (who's under a $147 million contract with the Dodgers) broke his left collarbone. It remains unknown if there'll be any major consequences for Quentin's rash actions. And Dodgers manager Don Mattingly is not happy about it: "Their guy charges the mound being an idiot, and our guy's out for however long," he told Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown. "And their guy'll probably be playing in three days. It's a joke... That shows zero understanding of the game of the baseball... He's not throwing at him at 3-2 in a 2-1 game," he continues to explain to OC Register's Bill Plunkett. "That's just stupid is what it is. He should not play a game until Greinke can pitch. If he plays before Greinke pitches, something's wrong. He caused the whole thing. Nothing happens if he goes to first base."
By the end of the game, Greinke was spotted near the benches with his arm in a sling and a dazed look on his face. From his point of view, "I've been hit by many pitches... Some have been intentional, some have not been. For the amount I have been hit and my hitting style, I'm going to repeat: I have never reacted that way... I never hit him on purpose, I never thought about hitting him on purpose. He always seems to think that I'm hitting him on purpose, but that's not the case. That's all I can really say about it."
And as for if there's bad blood brewing between the teams... "Now there probably is," Greinke comments. "I don't know if there was beforehand."
For those curious, LA proved victorious over the Padres with a score of 3-2.
