Fresh off the critical success of his stint in The People vs. O.J. Simpson, the first season of Ryan Murphy's latest anthology series, American Crime Story, now Courtney B. Vance has landed a role in a major franchise: the upcoming Mummy reboot! Joining a cast led by Tom Cruise, the actor who played Johnnie Cochran will be part of Universal Studios' new interconnected monster-filled universe.

Deadline reports that the Terminator Genisys actor is the latest cast member to join the monster movie, the first in a planned Avengers-like universe where others will collide, bringing Universal's classic monster library to life once more.

Vance will be playing an Army colonel in the upcoming film, which is set for a summer 2017 release date.

Unlike the Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz-led previous Mummy franchise, the reboot will be set in the modern day, where Cruise will play a special forces active or former soldier.

The film will also star Kingsman: The Secret Service actress, Sofia Boutella as the title monster, with New Girl actor Jake Johnson and rising European star Marwan Kenzari also involved. Chris Martin's girlfriend, Annabelle Wallis, will be playing an archeologist in the female lead.

It seems the studio will be repeating the winning Fraser-Weisz formula for this film: man of action and woman of science team up against the supernatural.

Behind the camera are Scorpion producer Alex Kurtzman as the movie's director, who will also take on the role of producer alongside Fast & Furious alum Chris Morgan and Sean Daniel from the previous Mummy trilogy. The film will come from a screenplay by Prometheus scribe Jon Spaihts.

According to Vanity Fair, monsters aside from the Mummy that will be part of Universal's movie series will include The Invisible Man (Johnny Depp is rumored to take on the role), the Wolfman, Dracula, Frankenstein and the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

The Mummy will hit theaters on June 9, 2017.
