'Person of Interest' S05E01: BSOD Jim Caviezel, Michael Emerson, Amy Acker Premiere Recap

CBS airs the Season 5 premiere of Person of Interest. In Episode 1, B.S.O.D., the all-out war between Samaritan and The Machine, are Harold Finch (Michael Emerson) John Reese (Caviezel), and Root (Amy Acker) ready to fight the all-out war between Samaritan and The Machine?

The phone rings and Root picks up. Back at the subway tunnels, Root reveals how Team Machine fought back. Caught on camera, Reese is carrying the blinking briefcase in the streets as he shoots down Samaritan agents.  All bloodied up, Reese  steals a car and drives away.

As the manhunt continues, Finch finds himself cornered and escapes into a bus. A black van suddenly crashes into Root's vehicle. Root makes a run for it into the subway. as Fusco shows up at the precinct. While Fusco (Kevin Chapman) deals with Internal Affairs, Finch saves Reese before heading off into the ferry. 

With two dead kingpins on his watch, Fusco has to give up his gun. With Finch having doubts, Reese tries to keep the faith alive. In a flashback, Finch is in the beginning stages of The Machine. Nathan Ingram (Brett Cullen) tries to convince Finch to believe the Machine can be used for good.

Back in the present, Root beats up an assassin but gets arrested. In Chinatown, Reese and Finch finally reach the subway. Unfortunately, the briefcase has stopped blinking. The two learn about the shooting from Fusco. As Reese works on unlocking the briefcase, Root finds herself in another standoff. 

Root is looking for a Russian fugitive named Bella. She finally meets the mobster who hired her from before. Back in with Internal Affairs, Fusco is cleared from all charges. He is a decorated hero and gets a commendation. While Finch tries to save The Machine, Reese runs out to find Root.

In the past, Finch is out on a date with Grace (Carrie Preston). She reminds him that he has a good heart; something his father used to say. Root gets a new identity from Bella. Finch gets the Machine back and running but the AI is decompressing into the computer. Finch knocks himself out during the backfire. 

Back at the precinct, Fusco hands in the reports to Reese. Getting paranoid, Fusco wants answers from Reese, who promises them later. In a flashback, Finch remembers teaching the Machine about death. The Machine wants to remember Finch and grow. Finch regrets his decision afterwards.

Bear wakes Finch up as his computer starts to burn. Finch realizes he failed the Machine. As Fusco has found evidence of a third shooter, Root gets her last identity. After Reese recuses her, Root steals the external drives.

Back at the subway, Root and Finch find Finch in the darkness. Root has the equipment to build a super computer using Playstation drives. As the wires are put in, Finch promises to The Machine that things will be different. Root agrees, the Machine is a reflection of Finch.

The Machine is resurrected but the servers are overheating. Reese uses liquid nitrogen to cool down the servers. 

The Machine is back online.
