Just recently, it has been revealed who Disney star Zendaya Coleman will be playing in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Zendaya is confirmed to be the new Mary Jane Watson.

The moment Spider-Man appeared in Captain America: Civil War had everyone excited and in awe of his presence in the MCU. And as his solo film is currently in production, a little Spider-Man teaser was shown to everyone present at the SDCC, with a brief appearance by the cast, including Tom Holland, who is playing Peter Parker himself.

According to Comic Book Resources, Zendaya was supposedly playing a character named 'Michelle' when the announcement of her participation in the film was made.

Not only that, she is now known to be the first African-American to portray the love interest of Peter Parker onscreen, according to NBC News.

The role was previously portrayed by Kirsten Dunst, during Tobey Maguire's run as Spider-Man in Sam Raimi's movies. Emma Stone played Gwen Stacy, Peter's love interest in the second reboot of the franchise, with Andrew Garfield playing the web-slinger himself.

The announcement of her role has received mixed reactions. Some were all for it, but others weren't, thinking that it wasn't a good idea at all to change the ethnicity of a character from a comic book. The same reaction could probably be said for back in 2015 when Michael B. Jordan was cast as Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch, in perhaps one of the biggest box office busts of the year, Fantastic 4; the altered storyline made Susan and Johnny step-siblings rather than blood relatives.

However, there were people who were quick to defend Homecoming's casting choice, seeing as it is Disney and Marvel's effort to be a little more diverse when it comes to the characters that will be shown onscreen and that the actress is a good fit for the movie as well.

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn said on a Facebook post, "If a character's primary attribute -- the thing that makes them iconic -- is the color of their skin, or their hair color, frankly, that character is shallow and sucks.."

Although it might not be totally confirmed as to who she will play in the movie, it does seem likely that Zendaya will be the new Mary Jane.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to release on July 7, 2017.

In the meantime, check out their appearance in this year's SDCC below:
