Edge of Tomorrow 2 promises to be a different kind of experience, as it plans to be a "sequel that's a prequel". These are the words of director Doug Liman used to describe how they want to approach the sequel of 2014's Edge of Tomorrow.

In an interview with Collider for his new series Invisible, Liman expressed that he wants the upcoming sequel to be a break from the usual sequel mold. An ambitious goal indeed, setting a high standard for the film, though no other details have been given on how this plan would be executed.

Starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, the first film was raved by the critics, and was a financial success for Warner Bros., with a gross amount of USD 370.5 million worldwide. It also has a dedicated fan base built by a positive worth-of-mouth, which may have been some factors that helped make a sequel come to fruition.

Along with Liman, Cruise and Blunt, Christopher McQuarrie will return as screenwriter, Variety reveals. They will also be joined by writers Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, both have worked together in the movies Race and Frankie & Alice.

Edge of Tomorrow certainly brought new and interesting things on screen. It gave viewers a different Cruise, as he plays Major William Cage, a cowardly officer that is trained by Emily Blunt's Sergeant Rita Vrataski, and has to relive the same day over and over again. At the end of movie though, Cage was able to stop the alien threat and seemingly end the time loop, bringing him back to the time when the movie started. This ending makes it unclear if the movie will be set on the same day, albeit with a different course, or would it go back further into the past.

While fans are excited to get their hands on this sequel, it may take some time before the film starts rolling, as the key players are occupied with other projects. Liman is currently juggling several commitments, one of which is Justice League Dark, Cruise is setting up his spy gear as Ethan Hunt for Mission Impossible 6 and Blunt will be working on the sequel for Mary Poppins in 2017.
