2014's Godzilla is up for a sequel, and Legendary Pictures acquires the services of Michael Dougherty to pen the script. If it is any indication, it seems that Legendary is getting pretty serious with its monster franchise.

Set for a 2019 release, Dougherty, known for his work on movies like X2 and Superman Returns, will not be working alone in the project. IGN reported that he will be joined by fellow writer Zack Shields. Dougherty and Shields also worked as co-writers for the movie Kampus, a Christmas horror flick that Dougherty directed and produced by Legendary.

Dougherty is also known for the movie Trick 'r Treat, where he was both the writer and director. This movie proved to be one for Legendary's successful films, even reaching cult status for the horror genre.

This would be a step in the right direction for the franchise. As earlier this year, the sequel's director, Gareth Edwards, stepped out of the film. There are still no updates yet on who will take over as director.

According to Variety, there are also reports that Legendary plans to setup a writer's room to create a universe for the world's most famous monsters, Godzilla and King Kong. Godzilla is known as the "king of monsters" in Japan, and King Kong has a king on his name, so a clash between these giants would be a battle of epic proportions. A Godzilla vs Kong movie is slated for a March 2020 release. The movie will be a joint effort between Legendary, who holds the rights to Godzilla, and Warner Bros., who has the reigns over Kong. While the two beasts have already met in 1962's King Kong vs Godzilla, thanks to today's movie magic, it would be wonderful to see these kings duke it out again on the big screen.
