The Secure Digital Card or SD cards have been associated with game consoles, media players, digital cameras and other appliance-like devices. SD cards are becoming more important as primary storage devices as it has better write performance and random read to account multiple apps making writes to the cards and small reads in rapid succession.

According to The Verge, there is a new classification system for the SD cards made by the SD Association that is designed to help customers for better understanding how each product will perform when it is used to run applications. The version 5.1 SD Specification add a new "Application Performance" that guarantees the buyers a minimum number of IOPS (input or output operations per second) just like the current speed classes that guarantee minimum sequential writing speeds.

The new "A1" class cards promise that the card sustained and support write speeds performance at a minimum of 10MBps, a minimum of 1500 read IOPS, and 500 write IOPS. The requirement is not too demanding having UHS Speed Class 1 and a regular speed class 10 cards must have to hit 10MB a second and this additional speed classes will be introduced to the market and meets its needs, MCV has reported.

SD Association published a white paper that primarily credits the Android 6.0's "adaptable storage" feature for being the reason for the newly discovered standard and to the Raspberry Pi, which included a no built-in flash memory or m.2/standard SATA drive connector and SD cards use as their primary storage.

When Android OEMs do not turn it off, the feature itself makes it trivial for users to be able to add it to their phones' internal storage. But the Secure Digital Cards are considerably slower than internal storage in most of the phone.

To counteract the problem, Android generates a warning pop-ups when SD cards don't meet the least performance threshold. But it might be difficult for buyers without further research to know the cards if what they're buying will be fast enough to avoid these kind messages.

As SD cards evolved, the additional regulation of IOPS performance is what matters. Buyers can now get the SD cards in different brands at Amazon just by clicking the links: SanDisc Ultra MicroSD, Strontium Nitro 64GB, and Samsung Evo
