Noah Lennox (better known as Panda Bear) of Animal Collective recently sat down for The Collaborators, an ongoing interview project by Daft Punk leading up to the release of their new album Random Access Memories. The project asks people who worked with the robots on the upcoming album what it was like to collaborate with the legendary French techno outfit.

Check out the interview below:

Panda Bear has an interesting connection with Daft Punk beyond having worked with the duo. Like DP, Panda's band Animal Collective perform while wearing masks and Lennox gave an interesting reasoning behind it.

While Punk's iconic helmets add a bit of showmanship and provide mystique for the robots, Lennox says AC's masks were "a way to make the music happen in a natural way without feeling like it was really us up there."

Basically, the band was self-conscious about their weird brand of music and what people would think. The masks allowed them to hide.

"The more I sit with a song, the more I want to hid what's really going on." He said. "I'll change lyrics or change the sound of the voice so that it's a little bit harder to decipher that feeling.

Lennox explained his connection to dance music.

"Even though I'm not much of a dancer myself -at least not publicly- there's something about the ritual of it that makes sense," he said.

Panda Bear asked Daft Punk twice to remix some of his material (both with Animal Collective and solo). While they declined both times, they apparently kept him in mind. The robots called him out to Paris to work on Random Access Memories

Lennox says working on an abbreviated time frame (they only had three days together) made him "nervous", initially. However, they came up with something "right at the last minute."

"I feel like [Daft Punk] challenge themselves to kind of go someplace new and it was cool for me to see that," he said.

For the record, Daft Punk called Panda Bear's voice "angelic" in their track-by-track breakdown of Random Access Memories.

Random Access Memories, Daft Punk's new album and their first studio release since 2005, drops on May 21.
