An Amy Winehouse documentary is in the works and will be directed by Asif Kapadia, the award-winning documentary filmmaker behind Senna. The documentary will feature never-before-seen footage documenting the late soul singer's troubles with addiction, her relationships and the warping effects of widespread media scrutiny.

A film on Winehouse would fall squarely in Kapadia's wheelhouse. His last film, Senna,  also documented the meteoric rise of a young star whose life was cut short by tragedy.  Brazilian Formula One driver Aryton Senna won three world championships before dying in a crash while in the lead at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. He remains the last F1 driver fatality.

The Winehouse-centered film will be produced by James Gay-Rees producer of the acclaimed Banksy documentary Exit Through The Gift Shop.

"This is an incredibly modern, emotional and relevant film that has the power to capture the zeitgeist and shine a light on the world we live in, in a way that very few films can," said Kapadia and Gay-Rees in a joint statement. Amy was a once-in-a-generation talent who captured everyone's attention; she wrote and sung from the heart and everyone fell under her spell. But tragically Amy seemed to fall apart under the relentless media attention, her troubled relationships, her global success and precarious lifestyle. As a society we celebrated her huge success but then we were quick to judge her failings when it suited us."

In other Amy Winehouse news, it appears that her father, Mitch Winehouse, is not at all happy with Beyonce and Andre 3000's cover of "Back to Black" for The Great Gatsby soundtrack.

"I don't think she brings anything to it," Mitch told The Daily Mail. "I wasn't asked for my permission if they could record it."

While Mitch has since given permission he says that Beyonce, Jay-Z, Andre, Luhrmann and the gang will have to pay a pretty penny for his late daughter's work.

"'They have got to pay for the privilege, which is what they are doing," Mitch added. "I can't tell you how much it is but it's a lot of money."

What do you think? Are you excited by the prospect of an Amy Winehouse documentary?
