The Royals head into Thursday's game at the no. 14 spot - according to sports columnist Diane Firstman, "Last year's Royals squad was 3-14 in their first 17 games. This version is 10-7 and leading the AL Central. The starting pitching has gone at least six innings in 14 of the 17 games so far." 

The Royals currently hold a 10-8 winning record having played the White Sox, Phillies, Twins, Blue Jays, Braves, and Red Sox.

The Tigers snag the no 5 overall spot (out of 30 teams). AsJoshua Worn points out, "The Tigers finished off a six-game West Coast stretch that saw them not only lose four games, but play in three that lasted at least 13 innings. After a welcome day off on Monday, they return home to face the first-place Royals and a (very) tired fan base."

Detroit heads into Game 2 with 10 wins and nine losses after playing the Twins, Yankees, Blue Jays, Athletics, Mariners, and Angels. The Tigers defeated the Royals in Game 1 with a score of 7-5.
