With the success of Surface Pro 4 and the hype surrounding the Surface Pro 5, fans cannot help to wonder if Microsoft has a new phone in its sleeves. Perhaps, a Surface Phone that will fight toe to toe with Apple's new Iphone, Samsung's S8, and Nokia's Androidphones, all of which is expected to come this year. There is a patent filing from Microsoft which features a smartphone that can turn into a tablet by folding.

It is true that smartphone users might sometimes want to replace the size of their small smartphone screens to that of a table-like display. Small screens are really annoying when you want to watch a movie or you want to play a game. Sometimes you want to fold the tablet to answer phone calls, and sometimes you want to extend the smartphone to enjoy movies or games more. Fortunately, Microsoft might be experimenting with that.

On this Patent Filings by Mircrosoft, there is a diagram of a tablet that can be folded in the size of a smartphone. This device is supported by a flexible hinge structure which secures the plurality of housings to rotate about an axis in relation of each other. The inventor is listed as Kabir Siddiqui, the one that patented the Surface Kickstand and Surface Camera angle previously.

This might be the rumored Microsoft Surface Phone. If product will be made for real, then Microsoft will held the record of being the first to develop a 2-1 foldable phone, much like its 2-1 laptop-tablet. According to Phone Arena, if Microsoft is planning to release this phone this year, it would be better if the phone will be released earlier than later as big mobile phone companies such as Samsung is also actively looking for this technology.
