US Supreme Court Refuses To Legalize Polygamy, Refuses To Hear Plea From 'Sister Wives' Star

Being married to more than one person is illegal in all the states of the United States and the capital itself. Polygamy is dealt as criminal offense in the United States. On January 25, 2017, the US Supreme Court was approched to hear a plea for legalization of polygamy.

By setting a precedence, the US Supreme Court has practically and permanently blocked any future move to legalize or decriminalize the polygamy. TV Star of reality TV Show 'Sister Wives' Kody Brown is currently living with four women as wives.

According to lifesitenews, Kody Brown submitted a plea against the Utah's anti-bigamy law and won in 2013. Later an appellate court over-ruled the decision of the lower court and maintained the previous law.

Brown pleaded in his appeal that anti-polygamy law violates his freedom of religion. He is living along with his four wives and 18 children in Las Vegas. Brown fears another migration back to Utah due to legal consequences. Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes termed polygamy as harmful for both the husband, wives, children and whole of society. Reyes said that the anti-Polygamy is helpful in curbing domestic violence among the multi-marriage communities and religious groups.

Former polygamist referred to the research done by the Canadian Supreme Court on Polygamy. He said that the research proved that the polygamy is harmful for all the parties, Wives, husband, children and whole society. The US House Bill 99 prevents women to marry or live knowingly along with a married person. Due to this legislation, Women can be charged under anti-Bigamy law.

Mail Online quoted the 'Sister Wives' reality TV show star and his four wives as saying that polygamous life is as healthy as monogamous. They said that Utah's anti-polygamy law violates their freedom of speech and freedom of religion. Muslims have legitimate permission for marrying four wives at a time.

Many religions including Islamic Jurisprudence support multiple marriages at the same time. Many religious communities even in the poorest countries enjoy the legitimate right to multiple marriages without any hurdles. Islam strongly directs husband to practice financial and physical equality among his wives in case of multiple marriages. Islam warns husband of dire consequences if he does not exercise equality among his wives.
