How far will Clarke and Bellamy go to save the world in The CW's hit series The 100? The fourth season is shaping up to be one of the most difficult seasons for the show as the characters are faced with the question of loyalties, as well as priorities - whether its saving their lives or that of the survival of the planet.

In a TVline interview with showrunner Jason Rothenberg, he said that Season 4 is one of the bleakest seasons of the show simply because the challenge of the nuclear meltdown which renders 96 percent of Earth uninhabitable is a basic question of priorities.

He said that the main question for the characters would be weighing who will survive and how they will survive in the next six months while the impact of the meltdown is in full effect.

"What they do when faced with that death sentence tells us a lot about who they are. People react in a whole series of ways to news like that. You can fight to the death. You can surrender and just break down. You can surrender and decide to ride it out and try to make the best of it until the end. And we'll see characters doing all of that," he said of the main struggle of the characters this season.

Rothenberg added that the decisions will weigh heavily on Clarke, who serves as the group's leader because of her innate need to save everybody. Aside from this, she is faced with the additional question of how to bring the people together to work towards the single goal of surviving.

As for Bellamy, while he is expected to wrestle with the guilt of his former sins, it would be interesting to see how his decisions and ideas will be different from Clarke.Rothenberg said that while the two employ different approaches to solve the problem at hand, Bellamy's commitment to turn a a new leaf will be something that fans of the show should definitely look out for.

A synopsis posted by SpoilerTv for Season 4 Episode 1 entitled "Echoes" indicated that the season premiere will revolve around how Clarke and her friends proceed after trhe fate of the world is revealed.

The 100 Season 4 returns February 1 on The CW.
