After the successful release of its 424-minute cut of the first two "Godfather" movies which featured never before scenes from the theatrical versions of the classic crime films, HBO is now engaged in the development of a movie that revolves around the making of the "Godfather" franchise.

HBO recently aired seven-hour Godfather 1 and 2 special called "The Godfather Epic" to positive reviews and made it available on its streaming site HBO Go where viewers can be treated to the first two Godfather films in chronological order and featuring key scenes that did not make it to the theaters when the franchise began in 1972, reported Screenrant.

The crime saga adapted from the novel by Mario Puzo featured Marlon Brando as mob boss Don Corleone who was set to pass on the family business to his son Michael, played by Al Pacino. The role was instrumental in recognizing Pacino's acting chops and catapulted him to the top of Hollywood's finest at the time.

According to a report by Variety, HBO is now planning a fresh take on the franchise which is focused not on the events of the film but rather in the process of its creation.

The project, entitled "Francis and the Godfather" will be a scripted film that chronicles Francis Ford Coppola's journey in making the movie, and will tackle the casting of Brando and Pacino into the lead roles of the iconic film franchise. The film is also expected to provide a peek into what production had to go through in dealing with real life mafia while the film was bring shot.

The screenplay for the movie is being completed by Andrew Farotte, while Mike Marcus, Doug Mankoff, and Andrew Spaulding are expected to go on board as executive producers.

The classic franchise is recognized as one of the most iconic and successful crime sagas in film history, winning best picture, best screenplay for Puzo and Coppola and best actor honors for Marlon Brando for his portrayal at the 1973 Academy Awards.
