"Cars 3" lead character, Lightning McQueen could be taking the back seat in the next installment of the Disney franchise after the latest trailer showed him getting hurt in a race. But the determined red racer seems adamant to get back in the game to take his place among the greats in the sport.

Based on the latest trailer for the film, Lightning will get in a serious accident as the competition levels up with newcomers who are better equipped to compete in a field of "next generation high tech racers" who will be racing for the Piston Cup, Den of Geek reported.

According to the synopsis, a young race technician will stay by Lightning's side to cheer him on and encourage him to get back up against the younger, shinier racers on the field.

Expected to be introduced in the next installment is the character of Jackson Storm, who is a rising star in the racing field whose overconfidence is the result of being designed better and faster than his contemporaries in the field. Based on the trailer, it is unclear if he will be a friend or foe to Lightning. He will be voiced by Lone Ranger star Armie Hammer, while Lightning will still be voiced by Owen Wilson. Cristela Alonzo will play the role of race technician Cruz Ramirez.

In an Entertainment Weekly interview with "Cars 3" director Brian Fee, he said that the film will be different from the first two chapters of the animated film franchise. Whereas before, it was Lightning who was the young hotshot set to make a name for himself in the sport, this time around, he is the aging veteran who will struggle to cope with the changes around him.

Original film director John Lasseter has called Cars 3 the "most emotional" installment in the franchise. Fee called it the "most human."

"Where the franchise goes from here, I have no idea what may be down the road, but I can tell you that for Lightning McQueen, as a character, I think by the end of the movie it's safe to say that this is only the beginning for him," he said.

"Cars 3" will come out in theaters on June 16. The last film in the franchise was released way back in August 2011.
