"The Shack" has finally hit the big screens but a number of Christians believe that the way the film portrayed God is scandalous. However, its star Octavia Spencer is not buying the controversy.

"The Shack" is a film featuring the loss and grief of a father who lost his daughter during camping. The child was abducted and murdered which resulted in her dad's depression.

However, "The Shack" is not an ordinary book as it also includes a controversial portrayal of God. According to Lifezette, the film sparks controversy among the faithful after portraying God as a black woman, called Papa, portrayed by Octavia Spencer.

Last December, Joe Schimmel, a pastor and host of the documentary "Hollywood" shared his thought about "The Shack." For him, the film, "lends itself to a dangerous and false image of God and idolatry."

Meanwhile, the stars of "The Shack" remain positive with the plot. For them, God goes beyond the image shown in the film. The viewers should feel the works of God and just recognize Him based on his looks.

The "The Shack" star Octavia Spencer told ScreenRant that she had read the book before it was adapted for the big screens. In fact, she loves it and praised the poignancy in the story.

Spencer added that her favorite part of the story was when Papa told Sam Worthington's Mackenzie Phillip that his predicament is his flying lesson. For the "The Shack" actress it was a beautiful way to allow the father to grieve his loss and leave that grief behind.

As for the controversy that "The Shack" is facing now, the award-winning actress is not buying it. For Octavia Spencer, the film only shows diversity.

"It represents a very diverse group of people, which is what the world is. It sort of dispenses with the conventional images of God and what we have in our minds as God," said Spencer. "But it's not saying this is what God looks like, but rather this is what the characteristics of God look like."
