"Sherlock" Season 4 might be the last fans see of Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes. The actor, along with showrunner Mark Gatiss, cast doubt on the show's renewal and revealed the reasons why Season 5 is unlikely going to happen.

Gatiss is unsure if there will be a Season 5 of the BBC series. He said in a recent interview that "Sherlock" Season 4 could be the last run of the show. He added that Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman's hectic schedule might not allow the renewal.

Gatiss said it is hard to get the two actors to film together. He admitted that it has been a struggle to find the time when they can both be on the same schedule. "It's incredibly difficult to get Benedict and Martin's diaries to align," Gatiss told The Sun.

Aside from the casts' busy schedules, Gatiss also took into consideration how "Sherlock" Season 4 ended. He said the finale does not deserve a Season 5. The creator said the finale ended in a happy place, which he thinks should be how a show ends.

Meanwhile, Cumberbatch also hinted that "Sherlock" Season 4 is his last. The lead star talked about family life when asked if he will reprise Sherlock in Season 5. The "Doctor Strange" star hinted that he may have to take some time off from work to focus on his family.

Perhaps Cumberbatch's priorities have changed following the birth of his son. He admitted that he wants to devote his time to his family, especially since he is expecting his second child with wife Sophie Hunter. "Of course, I now have extra responsibilities and I do have to make certain decisions about the future because there are more people in my life who are important to me," Cumberbatch told The Telegraph.

Regardless, BBC has the final word if there is a renewal after "Sherlock" Season 4. Gatiss said he is still willing to do Season 5. It would depend on the story and Cumberbatch's availability.
