Paul Wesley, who played Stephen Salvatore on "The Vampire Diaries", has broken up with his real-life girlfriend, Phoebe Tonkin, who plays the lead in TVD spin-off "The Originals". Even though none of them have come forward and confirmed the news yet, reports are swirling that the couple, who dated for about 4 years have decided to split up.

Their breakup remains an amicable one. "They are still good friends," a source told E! News. "The relationship just ran its course." Even though news of their split has recently surfaced, the couple seems to have separated for months now. They have not featured in each other's social media pictures since December 2016. This is evidence enough of their impending breakup since none of them shied away from posing together or openly displaying PDA in front of the cameras.

Wesley and Tonkin met on the sets of "The Vampire Diaries" when Tonkin was set to guest star in the role of Hayley Marshall, a werewolf. Wesley was married to "Pretty Little Liars" star Torrey DeVitto at the time. They filed for divorce in the following July and Wesley started dating Tonkin by the fall.

Theirs seemed to be a match made in heaven after Phoebe Tonkin on to reprise her brief stint on TVD in the spin-off series "The Originals". Soon her character became popular and both Wesley and Tonkin were basking in the heights of professional and personal glories.

Wesley even got to do a scene with Tonkin when "The Originals" and "The Vampire Diaries" did a crossover episode last year. Oddly, it was the first time that Wesley had shared screen space with Tonkin as they never got a chance to do so during her guest appearance on TVD.

Wesley later told Entertainment Tonight that both he and Tonkin has decided to wing it since they did not have the opportunity to rehearse the scene before the final take. "We just said, 'Let's just do it when we get to set,' because otherwise, it would just be awkward, and it was cool," Wesley said.  It is unclear if either of them has moved on and started dating other people. For now, they are focusing on their careers and remain on cordial terms with each other.
