Chelsea FC defeated Aston Villa today 2 - 1 after 34-year-old midfielder "Super" Frank Lampard scored both goals, clinching the away victory. Not only did the legendary Chelsea player insure today's victory, Lampard also broke the career goals record! After decades of holding the former record of 202 career goals, Bobby Tambling has been dethroned today by Lampard's 203rd goal.
Tambling played for Chelsea from 1958 to 1970 and accrued a total of 202 goals during his career as a Blue. With Lampard being a Blue since 2001, these two players' careers are both 12 years in length - only Lampard has one more goal than Tambling and is not showing signs of slowing down.
It is only fitting that Chelsea's most impressive goal scorer of recent years breaks the incredible record after about two years of retirement and cutting rumors. A simple YouTube search of Frank Lampard's name will show you some impressive compilations of goals over his 12-year career at Chelsea, all of which have accumulated to his 203 total.
Over the last few years, the 34-year-old midfielder has seen his fair (some would say unfair) share of bench time due to his age and a steady rotation of managers. Fortunately, that has not slowed "Super Frank" down. Not only has he been seeing a lot of time under latest Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez, he has been back on his impressive scoring game this season.
Today he scored both of Chelsea's goals after they had been trailing one goal behind Aston Villa for about 46 minutes (which is nearly a whole half of a match). Plus the game was tied up until two minutes were left on the clock. Unfortunately for Aston Villa, Lampard might have been itching for that record-breaking goal. After a cross from teammate Eden Hazard, Frank knocked in the game-winning goal, which happened to be his 203rd career goal.
