“13 Reasons Why” actress Kate Walsh says their show is so relevant that it should be made mandatory viewing in schools. She also said that Netflix’s controversial series should be watched by parents, too. The show tackles many realities of current issues such as suicide, depression, sexual assault and bullying.

Kate Walsh, who plays the main character Hannah Baker’s mother, it is important that schools should talk and have education around “13 Reasons Why.” She thinks that too many of kids’ lives have already been lost before schools and communities started having conversations and awareness about the issues. The former “Grey’s Anatomy” actress says that nothing good can come from shrouding anything in shame or secrecy.

According to Kate Walsh, after watching “13 Reasons Why,” parents, teachers and students should discuss about the different issues that are touched in the series. She feels that society is still in the shroud of shame or silence on issues relating to race, gender, suicide, depression and mental health. The actress added, "So to really see it for what it is and talk about it and get people help, [we can] prevent it."

Regarding the much-talked about depiction of Hannah’s suicide, Kate Walsh said that “13 Reasons Why” showed it as horrific as possible reports Teen Vogue. She said that by showing it that way and with the parents’ subsequent devastation, viewers will be forced to face realities of suicide. It will force them to start that all important conversation.

“13 Reasons Why” made sure that it showed suicide as nothing romantic or mysterious. According to Kate Walsh in her Huffington Post interview, there is no way that anyone will think of it as dreamy, gothic or someone simply blissing out. The show depicted suicide for what it really is – ugly and really hard for those left behind.
