Here's an unexpected bit of music business news. The music-identifying app Shazam does a ridiculous amount of business. As a matter of fact, the discovery app is directly responsible for $300M in digital music sales according to Shazam's executive Vice President David Jones.

The direct links to music as soon as they are "discovered" cashes in on the impulses of music buyers, and it does it often. Given that the global digital music sales came in at $4.11 billion dollars, Shazam is responsible for 7.2 percent of all mp3 sales. This comes to roughly 1 out of every 14 tracks sold and this is before you factor in Shazam's competitors like Soundhound.

According to DMN,  Jones is not only a master of steadily creeping into the way we purchase music, he's also a master of extrapolation.

"That's growing triple digits, so it's going to be double that every year," Jones relayed.  "It's certainly been double over the last several years."

While the logic behind Jones statement is slightly faulty, Shazam should expect continued growth and will likely continue be a major factor in the finding and purchasing of music.
