Well, this is exciting. Digable Planet's 1994 classic Blowout Comb is being re-issued on vinyl via Light In The Attic records. The follow-up to Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space) was the jazz-rap group's last album together.
To those not in the know, Blowout Comb is simply the Digable Planet's album that didn't have "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" on it. However, to anyone who has ever taken the time to listen to it, Comb is a certified classic with breezy beats built from samples of jazz legends like Roy Ayers, Bobbi Humphrey and Shuggie Otis.
Light in The Attic is issuing the first 150 orders of the album on white vinyl (sadly, already gone) and all albums will come with a special-edition embossed cover, fold out poster and updated liner notes. Order it here.
Here's what the label had to say about it:
"Blowout Comb is intelligent, alternative hip-hop that sounded like party music. Its lyrics are dense with wit, social commentary and politics - and its original inner sleeve was modeled on the newspaper of the Black Panther movement."
While a reunion was rumored last year, it never came to pass. Therefore, Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler's project Shabazz Palaces and this reissue are the closet we'll get to new Digable Planets.
