Jennifer Hudson going back to her American Idol roots? After an outstanding performance on the Season 12 finale, the former Season 3 Idol contestant is rumored to be joining the idol bandwagon again but this time as a judge.

According to an insider the Grammy and Oscar Award winning singer and actress is up to negotiations to becoming the next American Idol judge. "She got the offer and her reps are currently negotiating with [the show's production company] Fremantle," the insider said of the process that could take as long as six months to complete, reported The Wrap.

"The show's producers feel they've lost their core audience," the insider said. "And they want to bring back former contestants in order to tell their core audience, 'We love you.' They know they've made some major mistakes over the past few seasons and they want to make it right with their fans."

Hudson hit the Idol stage, May 17, for a hairraising performance with winner Candace Glover.

According to The Wrap, Fox declined to comment on Hudson's negotiations. However, another former AI diva, Kelly Clarkson is rumored to be considering an offer to judge the show.

It seems like Fox is going through hoops to boost ratings and redirect viewers to the former No. 1 reality singing show, but since NBC's "The Voice" launched in 2012, AI has struggled to maintain viewership. Last Thursday's season finale earned a series low with a 3.6 rating, which was 44 percent down in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic from last season's finale, according to The Wrap. It also fell to 14.3 million total viewers from last season's 21.5 million.
