The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theaters on December 13, 2013, and will feature a brand new character that does not appear in the original J.R.R. Tolkien fantasy novel. Tauriel is a female elf in this film, brought into the story in order to establish a love story with the familiar character Legolas (Orlando Bloom). She is also a skilled warrior that is sure to make her mark on the battle-heavy second installment of The Hobbit trilogy. Plus, Tauriel is played by "Lost" star Evangeline Lilly!

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lilly got to talk about her original Elven character.

"She's slightly reckless and totally ruthless and doesn't hesitate to kill," she said.

"Tauriel is the head of the Elven Guard," Lilly explained to the magazine. "She's a Sylvan Elf, which means she's of a much lower order than the elves we all became acquainted with in The Lord of the Rings. She doesn't hold the same kind of status that Arwen or Galadriel or Elrond or Legolas do - she's much more lowly. She sort of goes against the social order of the elves a little bit."

As mentioned before, Lilly's character does not appear in any of Tolkien's writings concerning Middle Earth, so Tauriel could be an exciting edition to fans. But how does she work into the classic story?

"She will definitely have a love story," Lilly said. "I can't give away too much about it. It's not a huge focus but it is there and it is important and it does drive Tauriel and her story and her actions."

She admitted to a love story but only gave hints on whether we would witness some love between her and Bloom's character.

"Tauriel's relationship with Legolas is significant. They've known each other since they were children, and Legolas' dad, [Elven king] Thranduil, has a soft spot for Tauriel."
