The Tony Awards always feature a high degree of razzle-dazzle, but this year's awards put special emphasis on feel-good fare from the theater world, namely from one of the night's biggest winners, the musical "Kinky Boots."
"Boots," a flashy Broadway production telling the tale of a shoemaker and his cross-dressing partner, brought home the award for Best Musical. The score was composed by pop star Cyndi Lauper, who earned her own award for Best Original Score. Billy Porter rounded off the production's success by winning Best Actor for his portrayal of the aforementioned drag queen (with his unabashed taste for the namesake footwear). "Kinky Boots" went away with six awards from 13 nominations.
"Boots" was the nights most successful production, but an overarching theme might have been the success of women in theater. Two awards are given out for Best Director, one for musicals and one for non-musical, and both of this year's prizes went to female directors. Diane Paulus won Best Musical Director for her work with "Pippin" and Pam MacKinnon won the non-musical award for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"
Cicely Tyson, 79, won Best Actress in a Play for starring in "The Trip to Bountiful." Her acceptance speech was especially moving, meriting two standing ovations from the audience. It's the actress's first Tony win.
Even those who weren't fortunate enough to bring home an award still got a kick out of the general proceedings behind the ceremony, which is renowned for its over-the-top musical numbers. Nearly a dozen Broadway casts took part in performances, and "How I Met You Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris delivered humorous commentary throughout.
