Chrisette Michele Former Background Singer J.Meyer EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: 'Perfect Storm' Singer Talks Breaking Out On His Own, R&B, and Making Love Songs

The hip-hop and R&B industry undergoing several transformations as more seasoned artist attempt to hold tight to the 90's influence yet remain modern and progressive, while newer artists attempt to dance on the pop borderline. The definitions of true R&B music have become obscure overtime, and Jeremy "J.Meyer" Smith is confident that he is the answer.

In the midst of America's economic downfall in 2007, J. Meyer was forced to drop out of Hampton University, in Hampton Virginia due to lack of finances. His departure from his studies, paved the way the discovery of another path as a he discovered his passion and talent in the music industry.

Bringing back the ballad love songs J. Meyer has a 90's yet modern feel, as his Teddy Pendergrass like voice screams classic R&B. His debut LP "Perfect Storm," is an intimate vocal romantic novel telling the story of J. Meyer's soul as he strives to become R&B's next rising star.

A man of a musically inclined family, he got his feet wet in the music industry working as a security guard, assistant, and background singer for his cousin Grammy Award winning artist Chrisette Michele. J.Meyer was working at a clothing store in Norfolk, Virginia in 2007 struggling to pay for school when he received a call that would change his life forever. "My cousin Chrisette Michele said she was signed to Def Jam and she asked me to go on tour with her manager/security. Later it became more jobs like background singer, and assistant to name a few," he said.

While on tour he learned the ins and outs of the music business through Chrisette Michele, and other veterans such , who encouraged J.Meyer to pursue a singing career of his own. After six years of touring the U.S. and the Carribbean, J. Meyer was ready to focus on his long awaiting project "Perfect Storm."

"At first I was associated with Chrisette, all the time," he said, " But, when I released "Perfect Storm," I went from being the cousin that works for her, to J. Meyer Chrisette Michele's cousin who sings, and I'm cool with that. "

"Perfect Storm," is J.Meyer's "phenomenon." The seven track LP was created in less than a year and proved to J. Meyer and his song writing partner Rahmel McDade that they were meant to be here. J. Meyer coined his self the next R&B Teddy Bear, and his music may just grant him the at title.

While he dedicated to love songs, J. Meyer is versatile as his musical influences are displayed in recent projects like his R&B remix to Kendrick Lamar's "Swimming Pools," and Ciara's "Body Party."

As pop music continues to push the R&B genre out of existence J. Meyer is confident that he will help revive it. "R&B is coming back full circle, from Musiq Soulchild, Chrisette Michele, Maxwell, Jill Scott, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Antoine Dunn, and a slew of other artist are keeping the brand preserved for the up and coming artist like me.
